Pain Management Course

for professionals

Practitioners learn how to manage pain using a combination of traditional Chinese medicine methods including gentle needling in muscles, which is called Ashi point needling in Chinese medicine and Dryneedling in Western medicine.

Leading specialist,  Joannes Boele van Hensbroek will teach you how to reduce pain, inflammation and irritation in trigger points, Myofascia, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

You will learn how to manage pain using:

  • Acupuncture of Ashi Points & TMM channels
  • Micro stimulation
  • Acupressure
  • Gentle Dry needling
  • Ear acupuncture

These techniques, are easy to learn and to practice and will enhance your practice and skill set.

This is a unique course because it will teach you how to treat the cause of the muscular skeletal pain, by using very ancient easy and safe to apply techniques.

Courses will be very useful for Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, Doctors, Massage Therapists, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists.

The foundation level of the course runs over two weekends.

More about the Pain Management Course

It is different to other dry needling courses because it approaches the diagnosis of pain and discomfort in the muscular-skeletal system (muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, fascia and trigger points) from traditional Chinese Medicine prospective..

In traditional Chinese Medicine pain, irritation or inflammation is diagnosed as a blockage in energy flow through one or more energy channels, called meridians. Besides the twelve main meridians you have twelve Tendo-Musclar-Meridians (TMM). TMM run along the same lines as normal meridians and are named after the main meridian they relate to. Obstruction of energy flow through the TMM causes pain and discomfort in the muscular skeletal system (muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, facia etc). It is these meridians that we target in our treatment. Pain and discomfort is relieved by eliminating the blockage in the meridian(s). There are normally two or three points per meridian that if stimulated will eliminate the blockage. This course will teach you how to assess which channel(s) are involved and which point(s) to stimulate to eliminate the blockage by using a variety of techniques including:, Micro stimulation of acupuncture points, Acupressure, gentle needling of muscles, Ear acupuncture, etc.

Besides these different methods of Acupuncture you will also learn five approaches to eliminating the blockage in the meridian. This will enable you to personalise treatment to each individual.

Acupuncture - Dry needling, what is the difference?

  • Dry Needling involves needling to altered or dysfunctional tissues in order to improve, or restore function. This may include needling of Myofascial trigger points, Periosteum or other soft tissues. Dry needling is purely for pain relief and is based on recent understanding in pain science.
  • Western Acupuncture utilises meridian points but applies it to Western reasoning with particular consideration to relevant neurophysiology and anatomy. It does not utilise any traditional Chinese medicine assessment methods or paradigms. Points are stimulated to create local, spinal segmental, or supraspinal, pain modulating effects.
  • Traditional Chinese Acupuncture examines changes in the tissues through the prism of the meridians as well as the status of the qi, blood and fluids (fundamental substances). Acupuncture is then applied to the meridians either utilising specific acupuncture points or non-specific areas where tissue changes are evident, such as trigger points.

Acu-stimulator

As mentioned above Pain is caused by a blockage in energy flow in the meridian. Stimulating the correct acupuncture points will eliminate the blockage and decrease pain. There are normally two or three points per meridian that if stimulated will decrease/eliminate the blockage.

This course will teach you which acupuncture points to stimulate. And we do this by using an ancient tool called “ Yuan Tchen” – blunt-tipped instrument – or Acu-stimulator.

The Acu-stimulator allows you to stimulate the acupuncture point by massaging the skin above which stimulates the energy flow through the meridian. Stimulating the correct point for about 30 seconds is often enough to decrease some of the pain.

This course also shows you how to incorporate your new skills into your current treatment plans.

Benefits for your patients and practice

This course has many benefits for your patients. It will give you:

  • the skills to effectively manage pain
  • show you quick assessment and treatment techniques, saving patient time.
  • increase your treatment options.

This course is different from other courses

Dry needling is becoming very popular internationally. Most Dry needling courses concentrate on just needling the trigger points and the taut bands that are responsible for the patient's current dysfunctions or pain.

This Pain Management course is different. You will learn:

  • how to eliminate pain in all muscular skeletal structures
e.g. muscles, ligaments, tendons facia, joints etc.
  • how to deal with irritation and inflammation in muscular skeletal structures.
  • how to treat the cause of the pain rather than the symptom
  • five different techniques to deal with pain, which you can vary depending on the cause of the problem and patient
  • five approaches to eliminating pain, which is a combination of local points and distal points
  • how to find the points and the use the Acu-stimulator
  • how to deal with problems other than muscular skeletal issues, such as headaches, migraines and toothache.

The Foundation Level of the Pain Management Course comprises of two weekend courses (A and B).
Each weekend course costs $425.

This Pain Management course does not teach you how  to diagnose or treat using Traditional Chinese Medicine. It only teaches you some simple techniques used in Chinese Medicine to help the blockage in energy flow in the Tendo-Muscular Meridians.

SPECIAL OFFER:  Book for the Foundation A & B courses at least six weeks before the start of Foundation A and receive a free start up material pack, valued at $100.

There will be a small amount of pre-course preparation for each course, allow plenty of time for practice.

The courses run from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Acupuncture Techniques

Micro stimulation - stimulates acupuncture points through pinpointed massage of the skin above the acupuncture point using the "Yuan Tchen", a blunt-tipped instrument. This simple, but powerful Chinese acupuncture technique originated in Vietnam about 1,000 years ago.

Acupressure - is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to stimulate acupuncture points. This stimulation releases muscular tension, promotes circulation of blood, stimulates the body's life force and aids the body's natural self-curative abilities.

Gentle dry needling - involves needling altered or dysfunctional tissues in order to improve or restore function. This may include needling of Myofascial trigger points, Periosteum or other soft tissue.

Ear acupuncture - also known as auricular therapy, has a long history in China. Helps regulate the body's internal organs, structures and functions.

Moxibustion - is a form of heat treatment used extensively in Chinese medicine. Indirect heat is applied to specific acupuncture points which warms the body and stimulates energy and blood flow. One of the causes of pain is stagnation due to cold. Warming the body by applying moxa eliminates the stagnation and therefore the pain.
